AI is causing a major expansion in data storage requirements, according to global research from IDC. “Organizations are generating more data, assigning greater value to it, retaining it longer, and increasingly bringing historical data back online for new AI workloads,” the announcement says.
Specifically:
- 95% of surveyed organizations are storing more data as a direct result of AI and generative AI adoption.
- 96% anticipate needing faster archive retrieval to support AI inference and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications,
- 76% report bringing increasing volumes of archived cold-tier data back online to support AI workloads.
- 74% say AI and GenAI have caused them to retain data longer.
- 61% experienced data growth of 25% or more over the past year due to AI.
Simply put, AI workloads are rapidly changing how data is retained, managed, and made available, says the IDC white paper commissioned by WD. Thus, “organizations need to evaluate storage across the full data lifecycle: considering what data needs to be immediately accessible, what can reside in other storage tiers.”
