The Fedora Linux team has officially released Fedora 42, with a few major changes along with many smaller updates.
According to the announcement post from Matthew Miller, notable changes include:
- KDE Plasma Desktop offering has been promoted to “Edition” status.
- COSMIC from System76 is now available as an alternative desktop choice.
- There’s a new streamlined installation interface.
The release notes highlight changes of particular interest to sysadmins, including:
- The Anaconda WebUI is enabled by default on Workstation. The new installer interface features a "Wizard" style approach with a sequence of steps that must be completed in order. It also provides built-in help in a side panel.
- GUID Partition Table (GPT) is now used by default on all architectures.
- Unification of /usr/bin and /usr/sbin.
- The boot-splash (plymouth) now defaults to using the EFI firmware framebuffer to show the boot-splash earlier during boot.
- The fips-mode-setup utility has been removed.
- Fedora CoreOS now receives updates from https://quay.io/fedora/fedora-coreos instead of the Fedora OSTree repository.
