The Vox Pupuli team has announced the first release of OpenVox, a community-maintained, open source implementation of the Puppet configuration management platform. According to the announcement, OpenVox 8.11 is functionally equivalent to Puppet and should be considered a drop-in replacement.
“The command names are the same, the configuration file paths are the same, etc. The major differences are in help text output, man pages, and so on,” the install page says. “This means that you can continue to use all the commands, modules, tooling, etc. that you’re used to, but at this time you cannot install both Puppet and OpenVox on the same system.”
OpenVox is considered a soft fork, the team says, because they intend to maintain downstream compatibility for as long as possible. “As such, Vox Pupuli is working with Perforce to create a Puppet Standards Steering Committee to set the direction of features and language evolutions.”
