Red Hat and Voyager Technologies announced the deployment of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10.1 (RHEL) to Voyager’s LEOcloud Space Edge IaaS Micro Datacenter on board the International Space Station.
“This collaboration extends a container-optimized, enterprise Linux platform into orbit, providing a more consistent and hardened operating foundation for AI-ready workloads to run in space,” the announcement states.
The deployment of RHEL 10.1 along with Red Hat UBI “addresses the extreme operational demands of low earth orbit” through the following capabilities:
- Immutable, container-native operations
- Quantum-resistant security
- Portable workloads
- Hybrid cloud extension to space
According to the announcement, this step “advances the evolution of space-based cloud services and orbital data centers (ODCs), delivering a security-enhanced operating foundation for real-time processing at the edge.”
